We have come to understand that love is not static. It is something we encounter again and again, continually deepening and expanding. Our past notions of love were limited, but each time we allow ourselves to open to it, we see more clearly. This endless opening transforms our lives, urging us to let go of preconceived ideas about how to love or what love should be. Whenever we choose to love we will—and must—die to who we were before we loved. Like Francis of Assisi, who experienced this unceasing love, we are invited to do the same. When we let love guide us, we are no longer concerned with success or failure. Our only task is to remain open, allowing love to flow through us as we encounter the world around us.
May we open ourselves fully to love,
embracing the transformation it brings as
we let go of who we once were.
(inspired by Richard Rohr, Eager to Love)
