Human beings see the world according to personal interests and histories. A developer sees opportunity; an angler sees beauty to protect. Perspectives are shaped by needs, fears, and ambitions. The natural world deserves respect, not domination. Respecting space is not optional; it is necessary for coexistence. Narcissism crosses boundaries for personal gain, while true friendship honors limits. We humans tend to have a narcissistic relationship with our fellow creatures, but there’s an option for generous friendship that creates a kind of reverence, respect, and enjoyment. Many humans have a narcissistic relationship with nature, assuming everything is available for their use. Control has been the pattern for centuries, but that pattern is now a threat to survival. The natural world asks for appropriate reverence. Learning respect is not persecution; it is maturity. Privilege resists change, but resistance must be overcome. Respect for life is not negotiable anymore.
May we choose generous friendship with all life,
living with reverence, respect, and shared joy.
