Participate in Shaping the Future
We approach the question of Christianity’s future with seriousness and care—a question that has shaped our lives and faith journeys. This question is neither comfortable nor simple. To ask it acknowledges that the future might not mirror the past or present, and that can be unsettling. Many are deeply invested in preserving the status quo, and even within ourselves, this question stirs unease.
If we declare Christianity’s future bright and promising, we risk falling into wishful thinking. That optimism could lull us into complacency, convincing us that no effort is required, and that all will naturally resolve itself. Alternatively, if we imagine Christianity’s future as bleak and hopeless, we might retreat into despair or cynicism. This, too, tempts us toward inaction, believing that our efforts are futile.
But there is another way. We can approach this question with openness—of heart, imagination, and mind. When we do, we find empowerment to contribute meaningfully to Christianity’s evolution. Christianity’s history is one of transformation, not stasis. It has always adapted, always grown. Our calling now is to participate in shaping its future as a force of reconciliation, justice, and renewal. We cannot afford apathy. The question demands engagement, and so do we.
