Within each of us is a wellspring of strength and clarity that guides our path toward freedom and justice. Howard Thurman called it “the sound of the genuine within.” It is the source that empowers us to act with courage and integrity. We can all be mystics. We should all know our mystical gifts are meant for our use in community. We honor the ancestors who walked before us—leaders like Harriet Tubman—who showed us that the mystical and the practical belong together. Our spiritual gifts are not for private comfort but for the public good. We are called to be public mystics, grounded in the sacred and committed to justice. Our relationship with the Supreme is seen through our actions in community. Freedom is both internal and external, and we must pursue both for ourselves and one another.
May we embrace our mystical gifts,
using them in service to our community,
guided by the sound of the genuine within.
