The tendency of human groups to engage in coalitionary aggression, where a majority unites against a minority, is a pervasive and concerning phenomenon. This behavior involves the majority labeling the minority as unclean, unacceptable, or different, leading to bullying, marginalization, and scapegoating. Such purification narratives, prevalent in politics, religion, and social dynamics, create a false sense of unity and righteousness but perpetuate division and harm. Jesus' actions challenge these narratives by humanizing the scapegoated. Recognizing and challenging these stories is complex but essential for moral and peaceful agency in the world. It requires embracing the complexity of life and gaining clarity to strive for a more peaceful existence.
May we embrace the complexity of human dynamics, challenge divisive narratives, and strive for a more peaceful existence by recognizing the harm of coalitionary aggression and working towards unity and acceptance.
